Postoperative pain management in pediatric surgical patients: Role of the nurse
Maliha Akter and Lubna Sultana
Postoperative pain in pediatric surgical patients presents a significant challenge, often under assessed and undertreated due to children's limited communication abilities and differing pain perceptions. Effective pain management not only ensures comfort but also facilitates faster recovery, reduces the risk of chronic pain development, and minimizes psychological trauma. Nurses play a central role in postoperative care, serving as both assessors and caregivers who implement pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. This paper explores the physiology of pediatric pain, discusses various nursing strategies for its management, highlights the importance of caregiver involvement, and emphasizes the need for ongoing nursing education to ensure evidence-based practices. The role of nurses extends beyond bedside care to encompass advocacy, emotional support, and education, positioning them as vital agents in pediatric pain control.
